Overview
Not qualifying, or qualifying but missing your target college, is common and does not close the door on medicine. In Punjab alone, about 9,700 of 47,475 candidates did not reach the 55% MBBS cut-off in 2026, and many more qualified without securing a seat at their first-choice college. You have practical options, and the right one depends on your score band.
First, check what actually happened
- Confirm your score on the official portal and compare it with your own answer key estimate.
- If you believe there is an error, apply for correction or objection within the university's window. Windows are short.
- Note your Matric, FSc and MDCAT percentages and compute your aggregate. This tells you which category you are in.
Option 1: You qualified but your aggregate is below your first-choice colleges
Apply anyway and widen your preferences. Include lower-merit public colleges, reciprocal seats in other regions, and self-finance or private colleges. Punjab closing merit guide shows that the top Punjab colleges closed above 93% in 2025, but many other colleges close lower.
Option 2: You qualified for BDS but not MBBS
BDS requires a lower qualifying mark (50%) and has its own merit list. Dentistry is a respected career with its own specialisations, and some students use it as a fixed path, not only as a fallback. If you plan to switch later, read the policies carefully, because transfers between programmes are limited and rule-bound.
Option 3: Retake MDCAT in 2027
A retake is the strongest way to change your merit because MDCAT carries 50% of the aggregate and your Matric and FSc marks are fixed. One extra question is worth about 0.28 aggregate points, so improving by 20 questions adds about 5.6 points.
If you retake:
- Treat the first attempt as data. List the topics where you lost marks.
- Plan 9 to 10 months of structured study.
- Check PMDC's policy on retakes and the number of allowed attempts.
- Keep your finances realistic, including the cost of coaching and a possible second round of fees.
Option 4: Alternative health programmes
| Path | What it is | Typical consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Pharm-D | 5-year doctor of pharmacy | Check recognition, clinical training and local employment routes |
| DPT | 5-year physiotherapy doctorate | Check clinical placements, recognition and career requirements |
| BS Nursing | 4-year degree | Check current Pakistan Nursing and Midwifery Council recognition |
| BS in MLT, Radiology, Optometry | 4-year allied health degrees | Many are admission-test based, with varying criteria |
| Biomedical sciences or biotechnology | Research-oriented degrees | Good for postgraduate study |
Admission criteria and recognition vary by institution, so verify that the programme is recognised by the relevant council before paying fees.
Option 5: Studying medicine abroad
This is possible, but it carries real risks: recognition by PMDC, licensing exams after returning, cost, and quality differences. Verify that the university is recognised for PMDC purposes before committing, and talk to graduates who have gone through licensing in Pakistan.
Looking after yourself
A disappointing result is stressful, particularly when family expectations are high. Talk to a trusted adult, a teacher or a counsellor. Medicine is one route among many, and this result does not measure your worth or your future.
A 4-week action plan
- Week 1: verify the result, calculate the aggregate, and list eligible regions and categories.
- Week 2: prepare documents and apply wherever you qualify, including backup options.
- Week 3: decide between seats, retake, or an alternative programme, after speaking with your family.
- Week 4: if retaking, start the study plan in MDCAT 2027 study plan. Otherwise confirm admission and fee deadlines.
