What the numbers tell you

The gap between first and fifteenth is only about 1.3 points. That means a tiny difference, such as two or three MDCAT questions, can decide which college you get. It also means that if you can reach about 93.5%, you are in range for many public colleges, while 94.5% or more is needed for the very top ones.

How to use closing merit properly

  1. Calculate your aggregate with the 10/40/50 formula.
  2. Compare it to the 2025 figures, then add a safety margin of 0.5 to 1.0 points because merit shifts.
  3. List colleges in three groups: reach (above your aggregate), target (within one point) and safe (below).
  4. Order your application preferences so that every group is represented.

Why closing merit changes every year

  • Test difficulty. An easier paper pushes everyone's MDCAT score up and raises the cut-offs.
  • Number of seats. New colleges or added seats lower closing merit.
  • Number of candidates. About 47,475 appeared in Punjab in 2026, and the competitive pool matters more than the qualifier count.
  • Policy changes, including bonus marks and category rules.

What if your aggregate is below 93%?

You still have routes. Lower-merit public colleges, reciprocal seats, self-finance seats and BDS are options, as well as a retake. options after a low MDCAT score explains each one.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Treating 2025 numbers as a guarantee.
  • Applying only to the top three colleges.
  • Ignoring reciprocal and self-finance categories because they feel less prestigious.
