MDCAT Atomic Spectra MCQs 2026 | Balmer, Lyman, Rydberg

An atom speaks in lines, not in a rainbow. Unit 15 is emission, absorption, Lyman, Balmer, Paschen, Rydberg and = −13.6/n² — forty questions because the paper loves this chapter.

What MDCAT 2026 asks in Unit 51 Atomic Spectra

PMDC Unit 15 is line spectra. A hot rarefied gas makes bright lines on dark (emission). A cool gas in front of a continuum makes dark lines in the same places (absorption). A hot solid makes a continuum — do not call that a line spectrum.

Hydrogen series are named by the floor: Lyman (UV), Balmer (visible), Paschen (IR). Only Balmer is visible. Lyman- is (2→1). H- is (3→2). H- is (4→2). How many lines from down: n(n−1)/ Ionization from ground is ; a kick is only 1→2.

Forty MCQs, forty labs — from fingerprints to series limits. Temperature does not move the lines; it changes intensity.

  • Emission vs absorption vs continuous spectra — three pictures, three questions.
  • = −13.6/n² eV. Ground −13.6, is −3.4, is −1.51, is 0.
  • 1/ = R(1/ ² − 1/ ²). is the floor of the series.
  • Lyman UV, Balmer visible, Paschen IR.
  • Number of possible lines from level n down: n(n−1)/2.

Often-asked Atomic Spectra MCQ patterns

These are the Atomic Spectra ideas that keep coming every year with new numbers.

  • A hot solid’s continuum called a line spectrum.
  • Temperature moving the lines (it only changes intensity).
  • Parking an electron at − — not a Bohr level.
  • Counting Balmer as UV.
  • Ionization as (that is 1→2, Lyman- in energy).
  • Forgetting the ½ in n(n−1)/2.

Worked Atomic Spectra numericals (

Work these on paper first. Then open the Unit 51 quiz — the same numbers are in the questions, with wrong options built from the usual mix-ups.

Wavelength of the 3 → 2 jump in hydrogen?

  1. That is H- , Balmer, visible red.

. 2→1 is Lyman- at , UV, not visible.

How many lines from

An electron in of hydrogen. How many spectral lines as it falls?

  1. Possible jumps: 4→3, 4→2, 4→1, 3→2, 3→1, 2→1. Six.

6 lines. Three of them are Lyman, two Balmer, one Paschen.

Atomic Spectra traps that steal the mark

A good option is a true sentence about the wrong quantity. If you miss, the quiz names the mix-up on the option you actually picked.

  • A hot solid’s continuum called a line spectrum.
  • Temperature moving the lines (it only changes intensity).
  • Parking an electron at − — not a Bohr level.
  • Counting Balmer as UV.
  • Taking as ionization (it is only 1→2).
  • Using n instead of n(n−1)/2 for the line count.

  • lines from n: n(n−1)/2

How to practise Unit 51 Atomic Spectra MCQs

Memorise four numbers: −13.6, −3.4, −1.51, 0. Every hydrogen energy item is a difference of those.

Name the series before you compute . If it lands on it is visible; on it is UV.

This unit is two quizzes of twenty. Sit them after photons (Unit 14). The 1240/ conversion is the same tool.

Choose topics and a test length up to 180 from the 393-question bank. Tutor Mode explains each selection; Timed Exam reveals explanations on submission. Use the complete review to revise mistakes and download your results.

FAQ

Common questions

Why are only some hydrogen lines visible?

Only jumps that land on (Balmer) sit in the visible. Lyman is UV, Paschen is IR. Series are classified by the final lower level. Balmer contains visible lines as well as higher-frequency lines approaching its series limit, so not every transition to is visible.

What is the ionization energy of hydrogen in MDCAT?

from to is the 1→2 excitation, not ionization. From an excited hydrogen level n, the ionisation energy is 13.6/n² eV. Always identify the initial level before using the ground-state value.

Emission vs absorption — same wavelengths?

Yes. Dark lines of a cool gas sit at the same as the bright lines of the same hot gas. The same pair of energy levels has the same energy difference in either direction. Emission releases a photon and absorption requires a photon whose energy matches that difference.

Does temperature shift the line positions?

No. It changes how bright the lines are, not where they sit. Position is the jump. Temperature mainly changes level populations and line intensity in the basic model. Real spectra can also broaden, so distinguish ideal line positions from effects such as Doppler broadening.

Is this the Bohr model?

Yes — levels = −13.6/n² and the Rydberg formula. That is Unit 15 on this site.

How many Atomic Spectra MCQs are available on DIFF. MDCAT?

The current Atomic Spectra question bank contains 393 practice MCQs across 1 topics. This is the bank size, not the length of one test. Choose your topics and a question count from 1 to 180, limited by the questions available in those topics.

Which topics does the Atomic Spectra quiz cover?

The selectable topics are Line Spectra. Use Select all for a broad chapter drill, Clear to start a focused selection, or choose individual topics. Questions are drawn from your chosen topics, so you can target a weak concept before returning to a wider test.

How do I build a custom Atomic Spectra test?

Open the chapter builder, select one or more topics, enter your question count, and choose Tutor Mode or Timed Exam. The available-question total updates with your selection. Start Test generates a shuffled drill; you do not have to follow a fixed Quiz 1 or Quiz 2 sequence.

What is the difference between Tutor Mode and Timed Exam?

Tutor Mode gives feedback and an explanation after you choose an option, and you can change or clear that choice. Timed Exam runs a countdown and keeps explanations hidden until submission. Both modes let you move between questions, use the paper map, and submit for a complete review.

How do I review and download my Atomic Spectra quiz?

Select Submit Quiz, then Submit & View Explanations. The review includes every question in your test, all options, your selection, the marked correct answer when a key is available, and the explanation. Download PDF saves a paginated review; Download Review saves an HTML copy you can open in a browser. The review also includes DIFF. MDCAT community links.

How should I use Atomic Spectra MCQs to improve?

Start with a short tutor drill on one of these topics: Line Spectra. Read the explanation for incorrect and uncertain answers, revise the relevant textbook section, and retry before taking a timed drill. Compare your reasoning with the answer key rather than memorising the option letter.
