Distractors are designed, not random
MDCAT Physics Formula Traps 2026 — What the Options Are For
A good MDCAT option is a true sentence about the wrong quantity. This guide names the usual stolen formulae so you can see them coming across all sixteen units.

How MDCAT Physics distractors are built
Almost every numerical in this bank has four numbers that all come from the stem. One used the right formula. One dropped a ½ or a cosine. One used sin when the formula wanted cos (or the other way round). One added the given quantities as if they were the same kind of thing.
If you catch yourself thinking ‘that option looks familiar’, it should: it is the parallel-sum, the missing half, or the swapped exponent. Name the theft before you pick.
Mechanics traps (Units 1–4)
These steal the most marks early, and they come back inside projectiles, torque and rolling.
- and at right angles are , not .
- Out and back, average velocity is 0; average speed is not.
- From rest, — the ½ is not optional.
- Range uses sin 2 , not sin . Height uses only u sin .
- Lift: going up, not mg.
- Work is Fs cos , a scalar. A static hold does no work.
- Centripetal force is the net toward the centre, not a third arrow. It does no work.
Fluids, waves, heat, fields (Units 5–8)
Continuity squares the radius. SHM does not carry amplitude. Coulomb is 1/r², potential is 1/r.
- Halve the pipe radius, speed ×4, not ×2.
- Faster fluid, lower pressure — never the other way in Bernoulli.
- Period of SHM does not carry amplitude. , not the upside-down version.
- Cp − , and isochoric work is zero. Adiabatic is not isothermal.
- Midpoint of two pluses: , V is not.
- Discharging at is 0.37 , not empty.
Circuits to nuclei (Units 9–16)
Matching, Lenz, diodes, photons and half-lives each have one favourite lie.
- Power in the load peaks at , not at
- Magnetic fields do no work.
- A static magnet in a coil is zero emf. Transformers do not rectify.
- ICE in a capacitor (current leads). Radio is not slower than gamma in vacuum.
- Half-wave does not double f. is Vm/ , not 2Vm/ .
- Photons: Intensity is count. Threshold is a frequency gate.
- Balmer is visible, Lyman is not. is 1→2, not ionization.
- = 0.693/ . Three half-lives leave 1/8, not 1/3. Heat does not hurry decay.
A 30-second check before you lock
- What quantity did the stem actually ask — speed or velocity, E or V, power or energy?
- Is there a ½, a cosine, or a square that the distractor dropped?
- Is in this bank? Do not smuggle 9.8 into the arithmetic.
- Lock. Then let the lab confirm, not suggest.
FAQ
Common questions
How large is the current MDCAT Physics practice bank?
DIFF. currently has 12,278 Physics practice MCQs across 16 chapters. The separate Physics Labs collection contains 640 questions with interactive simulations. Practice-bank counts and simulation counts are separate; not every practice MCQ has a unique lab.
Can I choose my own Physics topics and test length?
Yes. Open any Physics chapter, choose the topics you want to revise, and set a test length up to 180 questions or the selected-topic total, whichever is smaller. Use a small focused drill for a weak concept and a longer timed drill to practise pacing. Chapters can be opened in any order.
Are Physics tests timed, and when can I see answers?
Choose Tutor Mode for explanations after each selection or Timed Exam for a countdown and explanations after submission. Submit Quiz opens the confirmation screen; Submit & View Explanations opens the complete review. You can use the paper map to revisit unanswered or flagged questions before submitting.
How should I combine formula sheets, notes and MCQs?
Read the relevant chapter notes first, then write the formula with its conditions and units. Solve a short drill without looking at the sheet, review mistakes, and check whether the error came from the concept, unit conversion or arithmetic. Return to a timed drill after you can explain why the correct option works.
Should I always use in Physics numericals?
Use the value of gravitational acceleration specified in the question. Some worked examples in these guides use m/s² for simpler arithmetic; a question that gives ² must be solved with 9.8. Keep units consistent and avoid rounding intermediate calculations unnecessarily.
Can I save the complete Physics quiz review?
Yes. Submit the test to open its review, then choose Download PDF or Download Review. The saved review contains the questions from that attempt, answer choices, your answers, available correct keys and explanations. Keep it as an error log and revisit the topics you missed.
