What MDCAT 2026 asks in Unit 48 Alternating Current
PMDC Unit 12 is AC circuit elements plus the electromagnetic spectrum. A resistor keeps I and V in phase. A capacitor: current leads voltage (ICE). An inductor: current lags voltage (ELI). = 1/() falls with frequency — a capacitor blocks DC and passes high f. rises with frequency — a choke is an inductor at high f.
Phasors rotate anticlockwise. Lag means I sits behind V. The EM spectrum from radio to gamma is the same c in vacuum; only f and trade. Sound is a mechanical wave and is not on this list.
Twenty labs: a capacitor that goes quiet at , a choke that goes quiet at high f, a spectrum slider at c.
- Resistor: I and V in phase. Capacitor: I leads V. Inductor: I lags V.
- Capacitor: DC block, high-pass. Inductor: high-f block (choke).
- in vacuum, same c for every EM colour.
- Sound is not EM. Radio is not slower than gamma in vacuum.
Often-asked Alternating Current MCQ patterns
These are the Alternating Current ideas that keep coming every year with new numbers.
- , upside down.
- Current lagging in a capacitor (that is the inductor).
- Saying radio is slower than gamma in vacuum.
- Calling a transformer a rectifier (that is Unit 13).
- Putting sound on the EM spectrum.
Worked Alternating Current numericals (
Work these on paper first. Then open the Unit 48 quiz — the same numbers are in the questions, with wrong options built from the usual mix-ups.
C is fixed. Frequency is doubled. What happens to ?
- DC is → ∞: the block.
Reactance halves. High f passes; DC does not.
Yellow light, . Frequency? Take × 10⁸ m/s.
- A gamma photon of higher f has smaller ; c is the same.
Hz. Colour is frequency; c does not change in vacuum.
Alternating Current traps that steal the mark
A good option is a true sentence about the wrong quantity. If you miss, the quiz names the mix-up on the option you actually picked.
- Current lagging in a capacitor.
- Saying radio is slower than gamma in vacuum.
- Calling a transformer a rectifier (that is Unit 13).
- Putting sound on the EM list.
- Forgetting = 2 when the stem gave f in hertz.

How to practise Unit 48 Alternating Current MCQs
Write ICE or ELI on the page before you look at ‘leads’ and ‘lags’. Then name the element.
On spectrum items, the only number that is the same for radio and gamma in vacuum is c. Trade f against .
Sit AC after EMI (the source of the AC) and before Electronics (what a diode does to it).

FAQ
Common questions
What is covered in the MDCAT alternating current MCQs?
Phase, ICE/ELI, , capacitors as DC blocks, inductors as chokes, and the EM spectrum at c.
Does frequency change the speed of light in vacuum?
No. c is the same. Higher f is shorter . In vacuum , so a frequency increase is accompanied by a wavelength decrease. In a material, speed depends on the medium and can depend on frequency.
What does ICE mean in MDCAT AC?
In a capacitor, I leads E (voltage). ELI: in an inductor, E leads I, so current lags. The phase difference is for ideal pure capacitive or inductive circuits. In circuits that also contain resistance, find the actual phase angle rather than applying the ideal mnemonic unchanged.
Why does a capacitor block DC?
DC is , so = 1/() → ∞. No current in the steady state. A capacitor can carry a transient charging current immediately after connection. The zero-current statement applies to the steady state of an ideal capacitor, not the initial charging interval.
Is sound part of the EM spectrum?
No. Sound is a mechanical wave in a medium. Radio to gamma are EM, all at c in vacuum. Sound requires a material medium and cannot propagate through a vacuum. Electromagnetic waves do not require a material medium and differ in frequency, wavelength and photon energy.
How many Alternating Current MCQs are available on DIFF. MDCAT?
The current Alternating Current question bank contains 425 practice MCQs across 3 topics. This is the bank size, not the length of one test. Choose your topics and a question count from 1 to 180, limited by the questions available in those topics.
Which topics does the Alternating Current quiz cover?
The selectable topics are AC Phase, AC Circuits, EM Spectrum. Use Select all for a broad chapter drill, Clear to start a focused selection, or choose individual topics. Questions are drawn from your chosen topics, so you can target a weak concept before returning to a wider test.
How do I build a custom Alternating Current test?
Open the chapter builder, select one or more topics, enter your question count, and choose Tutor Mode or Timed Exam. The available-question total updates with your selection. Start Test generates a shuffled drill; you do not have to follow a fixed Quiz 1 or Quiz 2 sequence.
What is the difference between Tutor Mode and Timed Exam?
Tutor Mode gives feedback and an explanation after you choose an option, and you can change or clear that choice. Timed Exam runs a countdown and keeps explanations hidden until submission. Both modes let you move between questions, use the paper map, and submit for a complete review.
How do I review and download my Alternating Current quiz?
Select Submit Quiz, then Submit & View Explanations. The review includes every question in your test, all options, your selection, the marked correct answer when a key is available, and the explanation. Download PDF saves a paginated review; Download Review saves an HTML copy you can open in a browser. The review also includes DIFF. MDCAT community links.
How should I use Alternating Current MCQs to improve?
Start with a short tutor drill on one of these topics: AC Phase, AC Circuits, EM Spectrum. Read the explanation for incorrect and uncertain answers, revise the relevant textbook section, and retry before taking a timed drill. Compare your reasoning with the answer key rather than memorising the option letter.
