MDCAT Waves and SHM MCQs 2026 | Doppler, Beats, Period
A restoring force proportional to minus x is SHM. Unit 6 is springs, pendulums, , standing waves, beats and Doppler — and the period that does not care how far you pull it.

What MDCAT 2026 asks in Unit 42 Waves
PMDC Unit 6 is two chapters stapled together: simple harmonic motion, then travelling and standing waves. SHM starts from The mass-spring period is the simple pendulum is Amplitude is in neither formula. Energy trades PE and KE; the sum is ½kA².
Waves then say A standing wave is two travelling waves overlapping; nodes stay still. Beats are | |. Doppler: a source approaching raises f with one formula; an observer approaching raises f with another. Mixing those two formulae is a whole class of misses.
Twenty labs: a spring you can load, a string with nodes, two close frequencies beating, a whistle on a moving cart.
- SHM: = 2 = 2 .
- Amplitude does not sit in the period. Energy does.
- Phase, wavelength, frequency — know which is on the graph.
- Standing waves: nodes every /2. A closed pipe’s fundamental is a quarter-wave.
- Beats: |.
- Doppler: source moving and observer moving are different formulae. Both approaching raise f.
Often-asked Waves MCQ patterns
These are the Waves ideas that keep coming every year with new numbers.
- Putting A inside the period of a pendulum or a spring.
- Writing , upside down.
- Calling every quiet point a node of a travelling wave. Nodes belong to standing waves.
- Using the source-Doppler formula for a moving observer.
- Beats as instead of the difference.
Worked Waves numericals (
Work these on paper first. Then open the Unit 42 quiz — the same numbers are in the questions, with wrong options built from the usual mix-ups.
kg on N/m. Period? Does doubling amplitude change T?
- Amplitude does not appear. Double A, T stays.
s, independent of amplitude (ideal SHM).
Two tuning forks, and . Beat frequency?
- Four swellings per second. The sum is not a beat.
. Beats are the difference, always.
Waves traps that steal the mark
A good option is a true sentence about the wrong quantity. If you miss, the quiz names the mix-up on the option you actually picked.
- Putting A inside the period.
- Writing , upside down.
- Calling every quiet point a node of a travelling wave.
- Using the source formula for a moving observer.
- instead of f .
- Pendulum T depending on mass — it does not.

How to practise Unit 42 Waves MCQs
If the stem is a spring or a pendulum, period first, energy second. If it is a string or a sound, first, Doppler last.
Write ‘small angle’ next to every pendulum period. Large swings are not SHM, and MDCAT usually stays small.
Sit Waves and SHM after Motion (g in the pendulum) and before Modern Physics ( is a different ‘wave’).
Choose topics and a test length up to 180 from the 1,187-question bank. Tutor Mode explains each selection; Timed Exam reveals explanations on submission. Use the complete review to revise mistakes and download your results.
FAQ
Common questions
Why doesn’t amplitude change the period of a pendulum?
For small angles the motion is SHM. T depends on length and g, not on how far you pull it. The small-angle approximation is essential for a simple pendulum. Large amplitudes make the exact period depend on amplitude, so use the standard SHM formula only under its stated approximation.
What is the beat frequency formula in MDCAT?
|. You hear the difference, not the sum. Beats come from interference between nearby frequencies, producing repeated rises and falls in loudness. Use the absolute difference so the beat frequency is never negative.
Source approaching vs observer approaching — same formula?
No. Both raise frequency, but the expressions differ. Mixing them is a standard trap. An approaching observer meets wavefronts more often, whereas an approaching source shortens the wavelength in front of it. Identify which object moves relative to the medium before choosing signs in the Doppler expression.
Does pendulum period depend on mass?
No. Mass cancels, just as in free fall. The small-angle approximation is essential for a simple pendulum. Large amplitudes make the exact period depend on amplitude, so use the standard SHM formula only under its stated approximation.
How many Waves MCQs are available on DIFF. MDCAT?
The current Waves question bank contains 1,187 practice MCQs across 12 topics. This is the bank size, not the length of one test. Choose your topics and a question count from 1 to 180, limited by the questions available in those topics.
Which topics does the Waves quiz cover?
The selectable topics are Wave Motion, Progressive Waves, Wave Properties, Wave Speed, Wave Types, Sound Speed, Interference, Stationary Waves, Vibrating Strings, Organ Pipes, SHM, Superposition. Use Select all for a broad chapter drill, Clear to start a focused selection, or choose individual topics. Questions are drawn from your chosen topics, so you can target a weak concept before returning to a wider test.
How do I build a custom Waves test?
Open the chapter builder, select one or more topics, enter your question count, and choose Tutor Mode or Timed Exam. The available-question total updates with your selection. Start Test generates a shuffled drill; you do not have to follow a fixed Quiz 1 or Quiz 2 sequence.
What is the difference between Tutor Mode and Timed Exam?
Tutor Mode gives feedback and an explanation after you choose an option, and you can change or clear that choice. Timed Exam runs a countdown and keeps explanations hidden until submission. Both modes let you move between questions, use the paper map, and submit for a complete review.
How do I review and download my Waves quiz?
Select Submit Quiz, then Submit & View Explanations. The review includes every question in your test, all options, your selection, the marked correct answer when a key is available, and the explanation. Download PDF saves a paginated review; Download Review saves an HTML copy you can open in a browser. The review also includes DIFF. MDCAT community links.
How should I use Waves MCQs to improve?
Start with a short tutor drill on one of these topics: Wave Motion, Progressive Waves, Wave Properties. Read the explanation for incorrect and uncertain answers, revise the relevant textbook section, and retry before taking a timed drill. Compare your reasoning with the answer key rather than memorising the option letter.
