MDCAT Work and Energy MCQs 2026 | KE, PE, Power

Work is F along s, not F times a path that F never followed. Unit 3 is the work–energy theorem, KE, PE, power and efficiency — and the static hold that does no work at all.

What MDCAT 2026 asks in Unit 39 Work and Energy

PMDC Unit 3 is short on the page and long in the options. The stem will give you F, s and an angle, or m, v and a height, and the distractors will be the same numbers multiplied without the ½, without the cosine, or with power written as energy.

Work is the scalar product cos . Kinetic energy is ½mv² — doubling v quadruples KE. Gravitational PE is mgh with a reference you are allowed to slide; only differences do work. The work–energy theorem says net work equals E, including negative work from friction. Power is W/t or Fv. Efficiency is useful over input, never more than one.

Twenty conceptual MCQs, each unlocking a lab: PE sliding into KE, friction eating work, power as Fv.

  • = Fs cos . A force perpendicular to the displacement does no work. A static hold ( does no work.
  • Dropping the ½ is the numerical trap. Doubling speed multiplies KE by four.
  • Move the floor: the difference is what matters.
  • Work–energy theorem: E. Friction’s work is negative.
  • = W/t. Do not confuse joules with watts.

Often-asked Work and Energy MCQ patterns

These are the Work and Energy ideas that keep coming every year with new numbers.

  • through at J, not .
  • KE of at is , not (missing ½) and not (using mv).
  • A porter holding a suitcase does no work on it. Tired is not the definition.
  • A drop from rest: mgh becomes ½mv², so With gives .

Work these on paper first. Then open the Unit 39 quiz — the same numbers are in the questions, with wrong options built from the usual mix-ups.

Work at

A force displaces a body at to the force. Work done?

  1. is Fs with the angle forgotten. used sin instead of cos.

. Only the component of F along s does work.

A mass falls from rest. Speed just before impact, ignoring air?

  1. Mass cancels. would be or a dropped 2.

. Height and g set the speed; mass does not.

Work and Energy traps that steal the mark

A good option is a true sentence about the wrong quantity. If you miss, the quiz names the mix-up on the option you actually picked.

  • Using Fs when the angle is .
  • Writing without the ½.
  • Counting a static hold as work — if
  • Confusing power (watts) with energy (joules).
  • Efficiency greater than 1 ‘because of the machine’.
  • Using the wrong PE reference as if the number itself were sacred.

How to practise Unit 39 Work and Energy MCQs

Ask three questions of every stem: is there a displacement along the force? is speed changing? is time or rate involved? That splits work, energy and power.

Write the ½ in KE before you punch numbers. Most misses in this unit are a missing half or a missing cosine.

Open the Work and Energy quiz after Unit 2. The labs make PE slide into KE in front of you.

FAQ

Common questions

Does a force at to the displacement do work?

No. cos = 0, so Uniform circular motion’s centripetal force is the same story.

What is the work–energy theorem in MDCAT?

Net work on a body equals its change in kinetic energy, E, including negative work. Calculate the work of all forces, not only the applied force. Friction can make net work negative, and the theorem remains valid even when mechanical energy is not conserved.

Power vs energy — how does the paper trap you?

Same numbers, wrong unit. Energy is joules; power is joules per second. is the fast form. Average power is work divided by elapsed time; instantaneous power is F·v. A force perpendicular to velocity has zero instantaneous power even if the body is moving.

in Unit 3 as well?

Yes, whenever a height turns into speed or weight does work.

How many Work and Energy MCQs are available on DIFF. MDCAT?

The current Work and Energy question bank contains 872 practice MCQs across 5 topics. This is the bank size, not the length of one test. Choose your topics and a question count from 1 to 180, limited by the questions available in those topics.

Which topics does the Work and Energy quiz cover?

The selectable topics are Work, Kinetic Energy, Potential Energy, Power, Energy Losses. Use Select all for a broad chapter drill, Clear to start a focused selection, or choose individual topics. Questions are drawn from your chosen topics, so you can target a weak concept before returning to a wider test.

How do I build a custom Work and Energy test?

Open the chapter builder, select one or more topics, enter your question count, and choose Tutor Mode or Timed Exam. The available-question total updates with your selection. Start Test generates a shuffled drill; you do not have to follow a fixed Quiz 1 or Quiz 2 sequence.

What is the difference between Tutor Mode and Timed Exam?

Tutor Mode gives feedback and an explanation after you choose an option, and you can change or clear that choice. Timed Exam runs a countdown and keeps explanations hidden until submission. Both modes let you move between questions, use the paper map, and submit for a complete review.

How do I review and download my Work and Energy quiz?

Select Submit Quiz, then Submit & View Explanations. The review includes every question in your test, all options, your selection, the marked correct answer when a key is available, and the explanation. Download PDF saves a paginated review; Download Review saves an HTML copy you can open in a browser. The review also includes DIFF. MDCAT community links.

How should I use Work and Energy MCQs to improve?

Start with a short tutor drill on one of these topics: Work, Kinetic Energy, Potential Energy. Read the explanation for incorrect and uncertain answers, revise the relevant textbook section, and retry before taking a timed drill. Compare your reasoning with the answer key rather than memorising the option letter.
