What MDCAT 2026 asks in Unit 38 Force and Motion
PMDC Unit 2 is the heaviest mechanics chapter on the MDCAT physics paper. It is five topics sharing one rule: draw the picture, name the quantity the stem actually asked, then pick the equation that owns that quantity.
Kinematics lives on graphs and the three SUVAT equations. Newton lives on , the third-law pair, and the lift. Projectiles split into two independent motions with = 0. Momentum is and impulse as , including the rebound sign. Friction and inclines close the unit with sin on a smooth plane.
Physics Lab uses m/s² in every gravity stem, matching the MDCAT convention. Twenty questions, twenty labs.
- Displacement versus distance; average velocity versus average speed (out-and-back is zero velocity, not zero speed).
- s–t slope is velocity; v–t slope is acceleration. Mix those graphs and the mark is gone.
- SUVAT, including + ½at² from rest — the ½ is not optional.
- Projectiles: sin2 / g (max at sin² sin / g, = 0.
- Lift: + a) going up, m(g − a) going down. Free fall:
- Impulse including the bounce. Equal-mass elastic: velocities swap. Perfect inelastic: they stick at u/2.
Often-asked Force and Motion MCQ patterns
These are the Force and Motion ideas that keep coming every year with new numbers.
- east then north: displacement , distance . Both numbers sit in the options.
- From rest, m/s², s: m. Dropping ½ gives — the favourite distractor.
- Range at with m/s, . Using sin instead of sin2 is the standard miss.
- Rebound impulse: incoming +3, outgoing −2, mass → | , not m(3 −
- Incline , smooth: sin ². g cos is the normal, not the acceleration.
Worked Force and Motion numericals (
Work these on paper first. Then open the Unit 38 quiz — the same numbers are in the questions, with wrong options built from the usual mix-ups.
A car starts from rest and accelerates uniformly at ² for . Distance covered?
- , so + ½ .
- at² without the ½ is . at is , a change in speed, not a distance.
. If your option was , you dropped the half.
m/s, m/s². Horizontal range on level ground?
- sin2 / g. At
- — the maximum range on level ground.
. Complementary angles share range; is the peak.
A student stands on a scale in a lift accelerating upward at ². Scale reading?
- is true weight ( is m(g − a), the down case.
. Apparent weight rises when the lift accelerates up.
Force and Motion traps that steal the mark
A good option is a true sentence about the wrong quantity. If you miss, the quiz names the mix-up on the option you actually picked.
- Average speed when the question asked average velocity (out-and-back is zero).
- Using g sin with the cosine leftover from the normal.
- Forgetting that = 0 in a projectile.
- Writing in a lift that is accelerating.
- Impulse as m(v − u) without reversing the rebound sign.
- Using 9.8 when this bank — and MDCAT numericals here — take

- + 2as + ½at²
- sin (smooth incline)
How to practise Unit 38 Force and Motion MCQs
Always write the knowns with signs before touching SUVAT. From rest means thrown up means if up is positive.
For projectiles, split the page: a horizontal column that never changes, a vertical column that is free fall. Range, height and time each live in one column.
Sit the Motion and Force quiz in one sitting. Twenty labs. Then retry — letters move.

FAQ
Common questions
Are projectiles in MDCAT Unit 2?
Yes — range, maximum height, time of flight, and the two independent components with = 0.
What is the range formula used in MDCAT?
sin2 / g. Maximum on level ground at , where it simplifies to u²/g. This expression assumes negligible air resistance and equal launch and landing heights. Resolve the initial velocity into horizontal and vertical components when those conditions do not hold.
How is apparent weight in a lift asked?
+ a) accelerating up, m(g − a) accelerating down, 0 in free fall. True weight mg only when The scale measures the normal force, not the gravitational force itself. Apply Newton's second law in the vertical direction and choose the sign of acceleration consistently.
How many Force and Motion MCQs are available on DIFF. MDCAT?
The current Force and Motion question bank contains 1,127 practice MCQs across 8 topics. This is the bank size, not the length of one test. Choose your topics and a question count from 1 to 180, limited by the questions available in those topics.
Which topics does the Force and Motion quiz cover?
The selectable topics are Displacement, Velocity, Motion Graphs, Acceleration, Projectile Motion, Newton's Laws, Momentum, Collisions. Use Select all for a broad chapter drill, Clear to start a focused selection, or choose individual topics. Questions are drawn from your chosen topics, so you can target a weak concept before returning to a wider test.
How do I build a custom Force and Motion test?
Open the chapter builder, select one or more topics, enter your question count, and choose Tutor Mode or Timed Exam. The available-question total updates with your selection. Start Test generates a shuffled drill; you do not have to follow a fixed Quiz 1 or Quiz 2 sequence.
What is the difference between Tutor Mode and Timed Exam?
Tutor Mode gives feedback and an explanation after you choose an option, and you can change or clear that choice. Timed Exam runs a countdown and keeps explanations hidden until submission. Both modes let you move between questions, use the paper map, and submit for a complete review.
How do I review and download my Force and Motion quiz?
Select Submit Quiz, then Submit & View Explanations. The review includes every question in your test, all options, your selection, the marked correct answer when a key is available, and the explanation. Download PDF saves a paginated review; Download Review saves an HTML copy you can open in a browser. The review also includes DIFF. MDCAT community links.
How should I use Force and Motion MCQs to improve?
Start with a short tutor drill on one of these topics: Displacement, Velocity, Motion Graphs. Read the explanation for incorrect and uncertain answers, revise the relevant textbook section, and retry before taking a timed drill. Compare your reasoning with the answer key rather than memorising the option letter.
