Atomic Spectra
Unit 15 is line spectra: why atoms print sharp colours, emission vs absorption, and the hydrogen series (Lyman, Balmer, Paschen).

Atomic / line spectra
PMDC: Describe and explain atomic spectra / line spectra.
An atom may only sit on certain energy shelves . When an electron drops from a high shelf to a low one it emits a photon of that exact gap. So you see sharp lines, not a rainbow. A hot rarefied gas: bright lines on black (emission). A cool gas in front of a continuum: dark lines at the same wavelengths (absorption). A hot solid: a continuous smear, because packed atoms blur the shelves.
Hydrogen: = −13.6 / n² eV. Jumps that land on are Lyman (UV). On , Balmer (visible, including red H- ). On , Paschen (IR). The Rydberg formula gives 1/ . Ionisation from the ground floor needs ; the first excitation is → 2).

- Lyman: = 1 (UV) Balmer: = 2 (visible) Paschen: = 3 (IR)
- lines from level n: n(n − 1)/2
Hold these
- Same element: emission and absorption lines sit at the same .
- The eye sees Balmer only. Lyman is UV, Paschen is IR.
- Temperature changes how bright a line is, not where it sits.
- Ground state is − . is a free electron,
