Overview

If you are in FSc part two this year, or planning a re-attempt, one announcement could reshape your entire preparation calendar: the government says MDCAT will be held within days of FSc results from 2027. But reports describe the plan differently, and no detailed PMDC notification has appeared. Here is the state of play.

What was announced

In an announcement reported on 31 March 2026, Federal Health Minister Mustafa Kamal told media at Parliament House that PMDC has approved a revision of the admissions policy under which MDCAT will be conducted six days after the announcement of intermediate (FSc) results. Reports said the change would apply from the next batch of intermediate results and from 2027 onward, not to MDCAT 2026.

The stated reasons:

  • Currently there is a gap of four to six months between FSc results and MDCAT.
  • That gap has fuelled a large private coaching industry, which the minister said burdens middle-class families.
  • A shorter gap would reduce reliance on expensive academies and ease the pressure of preparing for two exams in sequence.

One report said the decision was taken on the instructions of the prime minister.

Where reports disagree

Coverage has not been consistent:

Source type Reported gap
Multiple news reports quoting the minister Six days after FSc results
Follow-up coverage on 1 April Within a week after FSc results

These March and April reports describe a future policy intention. We have not located a detailed 2027 notification fixing the exam date in the sources checked for this article. Treat the six-day figure as a stated policy intention, not a confirmed schedule.

Concerns raised

Students, educators and commentators have pointed out practical problems:

  1. Different boards, different timelines. MDCAT is a national exam, but provincial boards announce FSc results at different times.
  2. Logistics. Registration, admit cards, centres and security for well over 100,000 candidates normally take weeks.
  3. Overseas candidates. Short notice could be hard for overseas Pakistanis.
  4. Preparation style. FSc is largely descriptive, while MDCAT is a concept-heavy, speed-based multiple-choice exam, so students worry about switching gears.
  5. Equity. Some argue students must still prepare in advance, which could simply move coaching earlier.

What would not change (as far as we know)

  • MDCAT remains mandatory for admission to public and private medical and dental colleges.
  • The minimum thresholds are 55% for MBBS and 50% for BDS in 2026.
  • The exam format in 2026 was a 180-question, three-hour MCQ test with no negative marking. Confirm 2027 details when they are published.

What it means for your preparation

If the exam really follows FSc results within days, the safest assumption is that you will have no dedicated post-FSc preparation window. That means MDCAT preparation must happen during FSc, not after it.

A practical plan

  1. Now to December: Cover every PMDC unit once, in step with your FSc syllabus, since much of the content overlaps.
  2. January to March: Solve chapter-wise MCQs in the same weeks you study the chapters at college, so each topic is learned twice in different styles.
  3. April to June: Shift to mixed sets, past papers and timed tests.
  4. Final weeks: Take full 180-question mocks and polish weak areas.
  5. Always: Keep an error log and revisit it weekly.

Use chapter-wise MCQs to drill topics as you study them, and past papers to learn board styles. Our full roadmap is here: MDCAT 2027 preparation guide.

Prepare for uncertainty

This is the third year in a row where MDCAT policy or dates have moved: 2025 was rescheduled, 2026 moved from 16 August to 20 September, and now 2027's timing is being redesigned. A plan that peaks early and stays flexible is safer than one that assumes a fixed date.

What to watch for

  • A PMDC notification giving the exact gap and registration window
  • Registration dates announced before FSc results
  • Any change to syllabus, format or negative marking
  • Clarification for A-Level and overseas candidates
